Metropolia’s RADIAL and TITAN projects, in partnership with the Kira Growth Program, are hosting the ”RAKSA AI Innovation Challenge” in fall 2024. This competition aims to unite professionals from the construction industry with multidisciplinary student teams to collaboratively develop cutting-edge solutions for the sector using artificial intelligence. The Raksa AI Innovation challenge is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), making it free of charge for all participants. The competition will be held in English and Finnish languages.
The innovation challenge consists of three main parts:
1) Companies’ workshop where industry professionals reflect on the challenges and development areas in the construction sector and brainstorm challenges for students.
2) Competition stage where students and startups take on companies’ proposed challenges in groups and develop AI-based solutions.
3) Presentation of the solutions developed by the student teams

- Thursday, October 10, 2024 Competition Kick-off + workshop for students
- Thursday, October 10, 2024 – Thursday, November 14, 2024 Students work on the challenges
- Friday, November 15, 2024, 14:00-16:30 Presentation of solutions (companies may participate remotely)
- Thursday, November 28, 2024 Awarding of winners during the ”New Dimensions in Construction 2024” event

As a company partner in the innovation competition, your role is particularly important because you will act as a representative of your company and will participate in defining the competition challenges and sparring students to develop solutions to real industry problems.
As a sparring company partner, we expect you to participate in the events on October 7th (companies’ workshop) and November 15th (student teams’ solutions’ presentation), as well as in 1–3 in-person/online meetings with the student group. Metropolia’s supervisors will be available to you throughout the competition, providing support and facilitating sparring as needed.
Before the innovation competition, we invite you to join the Companies’ Workshop on October 7th. The workshop will provide a collaborative space where companies can bring forward a challenge or opportunity that is important to their business. We will help refine these challenges into clear problem statements for student teams to work on during the competition. The discussion of the workshop will be built around the following questions:
- What untapped opportunities exist for data collection and AI integration?
- How can data be leveraged to drive company growth and sustainability?
The challenge can relate to any area where data and AI integration could create value, and we encourage companies to share relevant data where possible. However, we understand that some data may be sensitive, and there are no requirements to disclose proprietary information. Instead, the focus is on defining challenges that can be addressed with AI-driven solutions, and students will have access to external data sources as needed.

The competition is open to all students from educational institutions and all backgrounds. No special expertise in construction or AI is required to participate – we believe that the best ideas come from multidisciplinary teams! What matters most is your interest in AI and the challenges of the construction industry!
The winning teams will have the opportunity to present their solutions at the ”New Dimensions in Construction 2024” event at Metropolia on November 28, 2024. More information about the prizes will be updated soon.

Workflow
1) Pre-assignment (now – 9th Oct 2024)
As a pre-assignment during the preparation phase, you are required to complete the ’Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment’ course (approx. 10 hours), which will familiarize you with the development and implementation of AI products. The course offers concrete examples of the possibilities of AI solutions, the development of AI products, and the integration of AI into the internal processes of construction companies. Be ready to present the course certificate at the competition’s kick-off event on October 10, 2024!
2) Work Phase (10th Oct 2024 – 14 Nov 2024)
During the working phase, you will start with a Kick-off event where teams will be formed and challenges will be distributed. On the same day, there will also be a workshop with the theme ”Using ChatGPT in AI Product Development” (TBC). The workshop will help you understand the theme and provide a practical technological tool for independent work.
After the Kick-off event, you and your team will arrange meetings independently. You will have about a month to develop innovative solutions to the companies’ challenges. You will be able to schedule 1–3 mentoring sessions with companies via remote meetings and will also receive support from Metropolia supervisors throughout the competition.
3) Presentations of student team solutions and feedback from company representatives (15th Nov 2024 – 28th Nov 2024
Participant groups will present their projects on November 15, 2024, from 14:00 to 16:30, during which the winners will be selected. The winning teams will be awarded at the ”New Dimensions in Construction 2024” event on November 28, 2024.
