About the competition

Metropolia’s RADIAL and TITAN projects, in partnership with the Kira Growth Program, are hosting the ”RAKSA AI Innovation Challenge” in November 2024. This competition aims to unite professionals from the construction industry with multidisciplinary student teams to collaboratively develop innovative solutions for the sector using artificial intelligence. The Raksa AI Innovation challenge is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), making it free of charge for all participants. The competition will be held in English and Finnish languages. 

The competition is open to all students from educational institutions and all backgrounds. No special expertise in construction or AI is required to participate – we believe that the best ideas come from multidisciplinary teams! What matters most is your interest in AI and the challenges of the construction industry!

By participating in the challenge, your team has an opportunity to win amazing prizes 🤩:

1st place winners will present their solution at the ”New Dimensions in Construction 2024” event at Metropolia on November 28, 2024. Also the awards will be given to the winning teams during the event.

Do I get credits for participation?

After participating in the innovation challenge, you can obtain a certificate, which you can use to for recognition of the course at your own school or university to receive credits.

Workflow

1) Pre-assignment (now – 12th November 2024) 

As a pre-assignment during the preparation phase, you are required to complete the ’Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment’ course (approx. 10 hours), which will familiarize you with the development and implementation of AI products. The course offers concrete examples of the possibilities of AI solutions, the development of AI products, and the integration of AI into the internal processes of construction companies. Be ready to present the course certificate at the competition’s kick-off event on November 12, 2024! 

We also recommend familiarizing yourself with the design thinking and innovation process through the Service Design Sprint MOOC.

2) Kick-off event and independent work (12th November 2024 – 26 Nov 2024) 

During the working phase, you will start with a Kick-off event where teams will be formed and challenges will be randomly distributed between the teams. On the same day, there will also be a workshop with the theme ”Using ChatGPT in AI Product Development”. The workshop will help you understand the topic and provide you with tools for independent teamwork.

• Wrap-up 

After the Kick-off event, you and your team will arrange meetings independently. You will have approximately 2 weeks to develop innovative solutions for the challenges. During the independent work, your team will be able to schedule few sparring sessions with commissioners as well as facilitators from Metropolia. 

3) Presentations of student team solutions and feedback from commissioners (26th November – 28th November 2024)

Participant groups will present their projects on November 26, 2024, from 14:00 to 16:30, during which the winners will be selected. The winning teams will be awarded at the ”New Dimensions in Construction 2024” event on November 28, 2024.
